Dr. Paul Brouwer helped initiate the research on Azolla ferns. He came to us from Earth Sciences for a Masters, then proceeded as a PhD which he completed July 7th 2017. Valerie Buijs made the early confocal microscopy images of the Azolla fern symbiosis used as illustrations in our publications. She is currently carrying out research on "Application of CRISPR/Cas9 technology to identify gene(s) involved in (a)virulence of Phyllosticta spp. causing disease on Citrus. " as part of her PhD training at the Westerdijk Fungal Biodiversity Institute.
